Football Leagues

Football is a system of leagues, and the league is what gives the season its shape. The Premier League runs August to May. The MLS runs February to October. Brazil's Brasileirão flips entirely — Série A there is an April-to-December competition with two legs and a different rhythm. Argentina splits the season in half. Mexico runs two short tournaments per year.

Every competition we track is listed below — top divisions, second tiers, cups, and a few outliers from football's edges. Pick a league and dive in. The featured ten are the ones most football fans will recognise on sight; the rest are the deep catalogue, and the deep catalogue is where most of the interesting football actually happens.

Featured leagues

Premier League (England) The most-watched league on earth. Twenty clubs, no winter break, and a global broadcast footprint nothing else matches.

La Liga (Spain) Real Madrid, Barcelona, and 18 clubs that have to play them twice a season. Tactical Spanish football at its peak.

Bundesliga (Germany) The cheapest top-flight ticket in Europe and the most fan-friendly experience. Standing terraces still allowed.

Serie A (Italy) Tactical, defensive, brilliant. Italian football's first division — twenty clubs in some of the oldest grounds still in use.

Ligue 1 (France) PSG plus eighteen clubs trying to disrupt the duopoly. The French top flight has produced more world-class talent per capita than anyone else.

Major League Soccer (USA) MLS. Twenty-nine clubs across the US and Canada, a February-to-October calendar, and Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

Eredivisie (Netherlands) Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV. The Dutch top flight — high-scoring, attack-first, and the league that taught the world Total Football.

Liga MX (Mexico) The biggest league in Concacaf. Eighteen clubs, two split tournaments per year, and an atmosphere on par with anywhere in Europe.

Serie A (Brazil) The Brasileirão. Twenty clubs, a calendar that runs April to December, and the production line for half of Europe's transfer market.

J1 League (Japan) The J1 League. Eighteen clubs, the most polished top-flight in Asia, and grounds that consistently rank for atmosphere.
