How Premier League away tickets work: allocations, loyalty points and official routes

Premier League away tickets confuse new fans because they are not sold like ordinary event tickets. You usually cannot wake up, pick Arsenal away at Anfield, and buy two seats because you are visiting England. Away ends are small, demand is high, and clubs protect regular supporters through priority systems.

The short version: buy through your own club's official channels, understand loyalty points, and be very careful with resale.

For the page version, see the Premier League away tickets guide.

If you are planning the away end as part of a bigger route, use the weekend football trip planner before you book travel, then check football matches this weekend for a realistic second match.

Why away tickets are scarce

Every Premier League ground has a home crowd and an away section. The away section is a limited allocation, and for popular clubs it is nowhere near enough for everyone who wants to travel. That scarcity is the reason clubs use season-ticket status, membership, loyalty points, away credits or previous attendance history.

The Premier League also treats away fans as important to the match atmosphere. The league has repeatedly maintained an away ticket price cap, with official statements noting the cap and the role travelling fans play.

The normal route

The usual process looks like this:

  1. The away club announces ticket details for a specific fixture.
  2. Sales open first to the highest-priority supporters: season-ticket holders, away scheme members or fans with enough loyalty points.
  3. If tickets remain, the criteria drop in stages.
  4. Some fixtures sell out before they reach wider membership.
  5. Collection, ID, digital ticket or transfer rules may apply.

The details differ by club. That is why a general guide can explain the system, but it should not claim a current window for a specific club unless it links directly to that club's official ticket page.

Loyalty points are not a gimmick

Loyalty points exist because away demand has to be rationed. A fan who travelled to low-demand midweek games is usually ahead of a new member who only wants the biggest away day of the season. It can feel harsh if you are new, but it is also what keeps long-term travelling support from being crowded out by occasional buyers.

If you want to build access, start with less glamorous fixtures, cup games, friendlies and lower-demand trips. Log them properly. A season of ordinary away days is how you become eligible for better ones.

Overseas fans: what this means in practice

If you support a Premier League club from abroad and want an away ticket, join the official membership, read the club's ticketing criteria and choose fixtures where demand might be lower. Do not assume a travel package is authorised just because it includes a hotel. The Premier League warns that unauthorised ticket sources can leave fans without entry.

Home tickets, hospitality or women's team fixtures may be more realistic for a first trip. A great football weekend does not have to start with the hardest away end in the country.

Resale caution

Away tickets are often tied to the buyer. Some clubs use ID checks, collections, digital ticket controls or rules against passing tickets outside official processes. A screenshot or PDF from a stranger is especially risky because it may not transfer, may be cancelled, or may put you in the wrong section.

If the seller asks for bank transfer, rushes you, cannot explain the official transfer process, or wants you to collect in a random place, stop.

Track the away days you actually make

Away days are where a football season becomes a story: early trains, bad service-station food, new grounds, tiny allocations, and the away end celebrating a goal nobody else wanted. Footbeen is built for that record.

Use the stadium tracker to see every Premier League ground you have visited, the football travel planner to add nearby matches, and the stadium map to keep the away-day trail visible.
