European football calendar 2026/27: the dates that actually matter for away trips
Most football calendars are built for television. Travelling fans need a different version: not only when matches happen, but when each piece of information becomes safe enough to act on.
The useful calendar has three colours. Mark draws in yellow, match windows in orange and confirmed kickoffs in green. Never let an orange date look green because a cheap fare appeared.
Late August: shortlist, do not sprint
The Champions League league-phase draw is scheduled for 27 August 2026. Europa League and Conference League draws follow on 28 August. This is the moment to compare cities, ticket eligibility and journey length. It is not yet the moment to assume every opponent is an away match on the date you prefer.
Use the Champions League draw planner to create an A-list and B-list. A cancellable room can protect a busy city; a chain of non-refundable flights cannot.
September to January: the league-phase rhythm
The Champions League league phase opens on 8–10 September. Europa League starts 16–17 September, with Conference League league-phase matches beginning 15 October. The competitions then run through winter, with Champions League league-phase matchday eight scheduled for 27 January 2027.
Early matchdays offer warmer weather and longer booking lead time, but also less time between draw and kickoff. Winter matchdays can be cheaper in some cities, while disruption and late-night transport become more important. Choose based on your actual journey, not a generic “best month”.

February to May: less notice, more emotion
Knockout ties create the trips everyone wants and the planning windows nobody loves. The opponent may be known only weeks before travel. Flexible fares, central accommodation and a backup match become more valuable than shaving the final few pounds from a ticket.
The 2027 UEFA finals are scheduled for 26 May (Europa League), 29 May (Conference League) and 5 June (Champions League). Finals require a different strategy: official ticket routes first, refundable accommodation second, and no assumption that reaching the host city means reaching the stadium.

- One city where two verified fixtures could create a weekend.
